As a parent, it can be super tough to decide what’s best for your little ones. Is it safe? Is it healthy? Is it organic? Not to mention the pressure to be the perfect mum or parent and the associated guilt that comes with going against the grain.
But what do these holy labels actually mean? Most people assume that products labelled “organic” must be safe, much like organic food is assumed healthy and nutritious. But the more these terms are thrown around, the less reliable they can become.
Organic can be defined differently depending on the product. For example, in the United States, the USDA certifies whether or not food items are organic, but non-food items aren’t as strictly regulated. In Australia, foods and fibers must meet the Australian Certified Organic Standard in order to gain the certified organic BUD logo. However, in many cases, the raw product materials hold the organic certification, and the final finished product has never been tested. Still, the manufacturer will likely put the organic stamp on their packaging and consumers are none the wiser.
Also, many people don’t realize that there are various grades of organic certification. Even the highest standard of organic certification can still contain up to 5% non-organic natural or synthetic fibers. Have you ever seen a label addressing what percentage of the product you’re buying is actually organic? Neither have we.
So, if we don’t go organic, what do we do?
By the age of 2, your bub will have spent more time asleep than awake (which means more time on our silk products)! With this in mind, we did extensive research around the best and most thorough certifications to ensure the utmost safety of our products. In the end, we decided to go with a much better testing system, proven to be much safer than simply an organic label, especially for baby products.
Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex is a worldwide, testing and certification system for all textile products as well as all accessory/trim materials used taking account of all potentially harmful chemicals. The tests for harmful substances are also based on the purpose of the materials – the more intensive the skin contact of a product, the stricter the compliance requirements. Baby and toddler products ensure the highest level of testing; therefore, all our products are Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 Class 1 tested. This means that when you buy a Silky Tots product (such as our Silk Cot Sleeve, Silk Bassinet Sleeve and Silk Fitted Cot Sheets), you can be sure that every single piece of it has been tested and is free of harmful chemicals or residues.
